Thanksgiving hits a specific note inside

For families affected by incarceration, Thanksgiving carries a weight of its own. We asked our Co-Founder and COO Becky Calderon what the holiday actually looks like inside, and what helps families stay close through it.

What is Thanksgiving like on the inside?

Becky describes real warmth, even in an unusual setting. The people around you become family. You share stories, swap memories, and watch whatever holiday programming is on. People find a way to mark the day because marking the day matters.

Do photos and mail really make an impact?

Yes, and more than most people guess from the outside. Becky says the emotional refuel from a card or a photo gets her through stretches that would otherwise feel endless. Inside, a physical card means more, not less, than it does out here.

How can families be supportive?

Some families hesitate to send holiday photos. They worry it will make the absence hurt more. Becky says the opposite was true for her. Seeing the family happy, the table full, the kids laughing, gave her comfort. It told her life was still going, and she was still in it.

The bottom line

Holidays test connection. They also give you a clear prompt to use it. Send the photos from the table. Drop a card in the mail. Make the call. Your person is thinking about you. Make sure they know you are thinking about them, too.
